One of the most important aspects of lawn care is preparing your lawn for dormancy in the winter so it can grow back strong the following spring.  You can help your lawn at the beginning and end of each growing season with aeration and overseeding.  It is most effective to aerate and overseed lawns in the Chicago area early in the spring and in the late summer or early fall.

Hendricksen Tree Care provides aeration and overseeding services for residential and commercial lawns in Barrington, IL.  Our professionals use specialized equipment to aerate lawns and we will follow up aerations with overseeding which will encourage new growth.

Lawn Aeration

During the growing season, use of the lawn that includes mowing and foot traffic can cause the surface to become compact.  Compacted soil cannot absorb water and nutrients very easily and the air exchange may be restricted.  When the ground freezes during the winter, these issues may worsen.

A great way to open up the soil for better absorption of water and nutrients and improved air exchange is with lawn aerations.  Aeration is a process in which a specialized machine is used to remove plugs of soil and thatch over the entire surface of the lawn.  The holes created by the process open up the lawn and the plugs are left to decompose on the lawn surface to give nutrients back to the soil.

Aerations benefit your lawn in the following ways:

  • Breakup compacted soil and thatch: Removing compacted plugs of soil and thatch allows lawns to better absorb water and nutrients and get more oxygen.
  • Increase nutrient availability: Nutrients can penetrate the lawn easier in the holes created by the aeration process and the decomposing plugs give nutrients back to the soil.
  • Helps lawns grow: Root development may be stimulated by the aeration process and overseeding after aeration helps lawns grow to their full potential.

Overseeding

Overseeding is when the surface of a lawn is seeded without turning the soil.  Lawns should be overseeded after aerations as the seeds can easily penetrate the soil in the holes left behind by the aeration process.  Overseeding should be done in the spring to promote new growth for the season and in the fall to help ensure that your lawn grows back full the following spring.  Thinning and bare spots can also be helped by overseeding.

You can expect the following from our overseeding services:

  • Seeds that are for your type of grass
  • Seeding of thinning and bare spots
  • Even spread of seeding over your lawn

After overseeding, your lawn needs to be watered frequently to help the seeds germinate.  Your lawn will grow thicker and bounce back healthy in the spring with effective overseeding.
