Before lawns go dormant for the winter, it is important for them to receive the proper care so that they grow back strong the following growing season.  The most effective way to get your lawn ready for dormancy is to have it aerated and overseeded late in the growing season.  In the Chicago area, lawn aeration and overseeding is most effective when done in August or September.

Hendricksen Tree Care provides lawn aeration and overseeding services in Lake Forest, IL for residential and commercial lawns.  We can fully aerate your lawn using the proper equipment and overseed after the aeration to help promote new growth.

Lawn Aeration

Over the course of the growing season, the soil in your lawn may become compacted from foot traffic and environmental factors.  When this happens, water, air, and nutrients are restricted from reaching the soil which can negatively affect your lawn.  The colder weather then freezes the ground which restricts air exchange and the absorption of water and nutrients even more.

Aerating your lawn late in the summer loosens the compacted soil and allows for better air exchange and soil and water absorption.  Aeration machines are used to remove plugs of soil over the surface of the lawn and the holes created by the process help the lawn breathe and better absorb nutrients.  The plugs removed during the aeration are left on the lawn so they can return nutrients back to the soil as they decompose.

Lawn aeration has the following benefits for your lawn:

  • Loosen compacted soil: The aeration process loosens compacted soil which improves air exchange and the absorption of water and nutrients.
  • Increase nutrient availability: The openings created by the aeration process make it easier for nutrients to penetrate the soil and the plugs removed by the process will decompose and give nutrients back to the soil.
  • Promote thicker lawns: Aerations stimulate root development and when done with overseeding, it can help the lawn grow back thick and healthy in the spring.

Overseeding

Overseeding is when the lawn is seeded without any turning of the soil.  When done with aerations, turning the soil is not necessary as the seeds will settle in the holes created by the process.  Overseeding can help strengthen healthy lawns and encourage new growth in bare and thinning spots.

Our overseeding services include the following:

  • We use seeds that are appropriate for your type of lawn.
  • The seeds are spread evenly over your lawn after the aeration process.
  • Thinning and bare spots are treated to help promote new growth.

You will need to water your lawn regularly after the overseeding process until the seeds start to germinate.  Helping the seeds become established before the winter will help your lawn grow back thicker the following spring.
